The Alpine Cup was a summer tournament in which such renowned clubs as Juventus Turin and AC Florence took part. At the 1968 Alpine Cup, Schalke 04 won in the preliminary round against Juventus Turin, FC Luzern, Young Boys Bern and two draws against Eintracht Frankfurt and US Cagliari. This put Schalke into the final against FC Basel (3:1) on 2d July 1968.
